Description
This was an assignment where I had to re-brand Santa Claus. Starting out by making marks and brainstorming using the mood board grid, I had to come up with different ideas of what Santa Claus represented. Below is the concept ("the one who grants all your wishes"), the logo I decided to build on, and the steps I took. The finished product was printed on stationary.

Cooking_Logos 4 CityTV
The class did work for a client. The client was CityTV, which is the local cable station for the city of Santa Monica. They were asking for a TV/web logo/logotype for their upcoming cooking program, Santa Monica Family Favorites. I had the privilege in having my logo selected by the client.

The class did work for a client. The client was CityTV, which is the local cable station for the city of Santa Monica. They were asking for a rebranding of their 2010 logotype for their Santa Monica Vote portion of their TV programming and website @ http://www.smvote.org. SMVote provides Santa Monica residents with their local political/election news.

One Candle, 5 Movements
Inspired by alphabet illustration/design work, I was supposed to make postcard/flashcard designs based on five of the many design movements (A-Z). The artwork would illustrate the style of the chosen art movement and would include the alphabet initial of the chosen movement, the name of the movement, and one neutral object throughout. I chose Art Nouveau, Constructivism, SachPlakat, Suprematism, and Surrealism. Although the styles are different there had to be unity between all of the cards as if it were a set/series.
Final Piece was chosen to be in the AIGA Emerge Exhibit, among other students' work, to represent our school, Art Institute of Los Angeles.

How To Wrap 5 Eggs
The goal was to find 5 ways to package 5 eggs. The packages are to look like a set/series. Inspired by the book, "How to Wrap 5 Eggs" and thinking about materials to use to make the packages, I wanted to approach the project using materials that make the series feel Japanese and natural by style, color, and materials used... not sure about the styrofoam. I also wanted the packages to tie together through shape and structure making each one very geometric. And to break up the geometry with one organic.

Street Art In_Motion
This had to be a 3-4min music video. The idea is about change and I used the song Satellite by Dave Matthew's Band and used photographs of murals that I had taken and have collected from all around Los Angeles County and from Art In The Streets '11 at the MOCA. An Homage to Street Art.

Portraits in Graphite

These are commissioned and non-commissioned pieces. They were done a few years ago and sketched from photographs provided by the client. Sorry for the poor quality copies but at the time could use only what was available to make copies. Match.Made Log
This was a project where I had to choose a man-made material and design a sculpture that tells an environmental message. I chose to use matches in a way that would form a tree stump.
The Message: Matches are made out of wood. Matches start fires. Man-made fires can burn down the same thing that this material is constructed from.

Rtsm Publication
The goal of this project was to create a children's book that is Artism.
My instructor, Susanne Manheimer has been trying to inspire the students and the design community with a new view on art. An art movement called Artism ("Rtsm") expresses design and art through the use of our most familiar symbols that we see, use, and pass by every day. Through concept and design this movement is bringing a new experience to the art and design world.

The assignment was to choose a graphic designer from a list of designers, that inspires me (for me, it's April Greiman) and incorporate her work and her story in the layout of these spreads.

Car Manual Redesigned
The assignment was to redesign a car manual that would be more visually pleasing and interesting to read as well as look at -- the challenge being to fit all the text and images of the original manual into the design. Given the car manual of the Toyota Prius, I thought about what were the most important characteristics of a Prius that makes this car special. The car is eco-friendly and runs on gas AND electric. The whole design becomes powered through vibrant colors, sparks, waves of electricity, and an engine-block-turned-battery.

Experimental "TYPE THREE"
For these assignments I had to come up with my own style of lettering using the name of the class, "Type 3." Simple vibrant colors were chosen to put emphasis and clarity on the letters' forms. Another guideline was to show interconnectedness between the letters, especially by breaking the baselines.

Illustration for The Alchemist
After reading the book, The Alchemist by Paul Coelho, I had to conceptually illustrate the book using the title of the book, the author's name, and my own illustration that would represent the essence of the book. I chose to work with pen for the linework and various textures which I utilized in Photoshop.

Pool Balls in Illustrator
For this project I had to choose a photograph (I chose pool balls) and replicate the image as close as possible using only Illustrator. The goal was to be able to capture the shapes, the gradients, and the reflections throughout the image.

Digital MessageMaking
This project involved designing with found images and juxtaposing them. By this postproduction process, I tried to express the concept("Optimism vs. Pessimism"). Then I had to design the final piece as a poster unique to the design layout.

Piggyback Tracks
For this project I had to find elements in a collection of photos I had taken, that I could combine in order to create a style of type that represents the Union Station, a location I chose for the project.
"Piggyback Tracks": The goal was to come up with a name that would be fun and amusing to a kid. The same way that kids get piggyback rides from their parents, people ride the buses/trains at the Union Station to get from place to place.

Shape In Motion
This was a project where I had to make a custom shape out of cardboard. Once I was happy with the shape, I was only able to use multiples of this one shape to create a sense of movement. Using hot glue, spacers, and slight variations in the position of the custom-shaped cardboard I was able to create this movement of twists, turns, and loops from one end of the piece to the other.

Collage Piece
For this project I had to look through magazines, books, in drawers around the house, or in the garage. Anywhere to collect cool type, textures, numbers, images, whatever that I could find that would look interesting in a collage, even handwritten stuff. Many of the textures are made by hand and from photos I had taken. The first collage is the final one chosen and the last two are the ones I didn't choose but I will eventually work on more. This project was fun to incorporate hands-on with digital, and realize that design elements can come from anywhere... an old deck of cards to rubber stamps, receipts, and postage. The final piece was to look worn and vintage by the color, imagery, type, and textures.

Bamboo & Water
The goal of the project was to show depth through various layers by using only black, white, and gray construction paper with geometric and organic shapes only by folding and stacking and NO GLUE. Using two central images I overlapped and combined the sections of the folding book with the shapes, color, and pattern of the connecting pages. I chose to work with the shapes of bamboo and water with all of black, white, and gray.

These are commissioned and non-commissioned pieces. Most are tattoo patterns designed for people sized to fit as wraparound for the body, shoulder pieces, and sleeves. Orchid in Illustrator
For this assignment I had to replicate the photo as close as possible using only Illustrator. The goal was to be able to capture the shapes, gradients, and lines of the image.

Color Theory of a Dragon
For this project I had to choose a fabric and divide the fabric into 8 sections following the flow of the design. Starting with tracing paper (as per assignment), I transferred the design to bristol paper. Then spray mounted the bristol to the fabric. Using acrylics the goal was to use different coloring schemes for 7 of the sections and to cut out the 8th section revealing the fabric. The actual fabric is showed in the lower part of the body.

2-in-1 Balsa Project
This was a project where I had to find and research two buildings whose designs caught my interest. I chose the Crooked House (Sopot, Poland) and the Dancing House (Prague, Czech Republic). The assignment was to take a part of each of these structures and somehow combine them into one piece of sculpture/architectural model. The first part of the project was to make a rough model with toothpicks and them finalize the design 4 times the scale. This final structure is 28in x 21in x 30in spray painted 2 shades of blue.
